Rise Again

(from In the Shadow of my Pen: A Collection of Poetry and Prose)

Unsplash Image by Hassan Rafhaan

Cut me down like a sheaf of corn in a field of wheat.

Slaughter me like a lamb and watch me bleed.

Pour kerosene on my skin then light a match.

Bury me alive as I scratch, trying to find a way out of the earth.

Keep trying to destroy me, but you will never win.

I am a fighter, a warrior, and a soldier of war.

Do not underestimate my resilience or strength.

My sword is already dripping with blood like the ink from this pen.

Kill me if you wish, but I will rise again.

Paradox

(written December 2022)

Unsplash Image by Elia Pellegrini

She is a paradox, a hurricane or a breeze,

a rapidly flowing river or a calm sea.

But you will only discover what lies in her heart and mind if you look inside.

She is a paradox, a mysterious box of darkness and light.

Silhouettes

As a child, she was full of hopes and dreams.

Her life had only begun before her lay a future untold.

But at the midway line, she took a wrong turn in the road.

The path she chose stole everything she had, including her soul.

Now, years have passed, and she has found her strength again.

But this child, now a woman, still lives with the pain.

The person she was will never return.

All that remains of her hopes and dreams are silhouette’s in the sun.

Pieces of Me

(from In the Shadow of my Pen: A collection of Poetry and Prose)

Pieces of me.

Blowing in the wind,

like the petals from a flower or the leaves from a tree.

Look around, and you will find.

Pieces of me.

3am thoughts

August 2022

(my own words)

3 am thoughts cannot disguise the betrayal in penitent eyes.

Lies now rise to the surface, bubbling in a guilt-ridden cauldron of remorse, as tears form and then disperse salty rain.

3 am thoughts accentuate the pain of wicked deeds and the aftermath of events.

3 am thoughts play a lament of sorrow as we lie awake dreading tomorrow.

Amid the chaos of our minds, we may hope that morning does not arrive.

But we see the sun as it rises, and then we know we must face both our angst and demise.

Freedom

(written March 2023)

Unsplash Image by Aditya Saxena

Freedom is the bird that flies
unbound from the shackles of its cage.
Freedom is the wisdom that comes with age.
Freedom is letting go of what no longer serves.
Freedom takes you by the hand while allowing you to grow.
Freedom is the key to a kingdom of peace
where we leave all our worries behind.
Freedom is not seeing the mirror of you through someone else’s eyes.
Accepting yourself
and knowing your worth
that is where freedom lies.

Silence (is not empty)

(written November 2022)

Unsplash Image by Kristina Flour

Silence is not empty.

It is full of unspoken words, promises broken and meaningless actions.

Silence holds the answer to every question that runs through your mind.

If only you take the time to consider the lack of words.

And at the end of the day, silence is far better than any deceitful blurb.

Through the window

( written March 2023)

Unsplash Image by Alec Douglas

The greyness of the day
reminds
me of pain
as the rain falls like shards of glass piercing my heart.
So I turn this thought over.
Instead of wallowing in lament
I imagine the rain is a waterfall which I am now standing under.
A flash of lightning,
the roar of thunder,
and I feel my pain dissipate.
Taking back my power.
Now in another time
another place.
As I look out the window
the sun begins to shine.

Different Corner

(written February 2023)

Unsplash Image by Stories

I had a dream.

We never met.

I turned a different corner.

One that did not lead to you.

If only dreams were true.

Years wasted,

regret never tasted so good.

I wept in your presence.

I waited for deliverance,

hoping for tomorrow.

Yet, I cried when you left.

Now you have passed from this world to the next.

A different corner for you, and I can turn a different corner too.

Architect

(written February 2023)

Unsplash Image by Jess Bailey

I am an architect with a pen.
I design stories and then.
I release them onto the paper.
Are my words unerring or not?
Did I write to you?
It is easy to misconstrue anything said.
A construction of words misread can lead to a chaotic mind.
That is why I use the ink from my soul to build my story.
Resonance is my only goal.

Thoughts

(written March 2023)

Unsplash Image by Jason Leung

The mind is a tightrope.

Our subconscious is an abyss

as we hold on with white knuckles to avoid an eclipse.

Darkness beckons.

And the Grim Reaper waits

while we search for a spark of hope or a switch.

The dark and the light fight it out to see who wins.

But the truth of the matter is this.

Only we hold the key to our thoughts.

We manufacture them every day as we saturate our brains

with images and words in every way.

So consume only the good, leave the ugly on the side of your plate.

And then your mind will be a happy place.

Falling/Flying

(written February 2023)

Falling

Into you.

I let go.

Now imbued in your light, I surrender.

Arms so tender, hold me tight.

Your undertow of passion is sublime.

Flying

Higher.

We soar like Icarus

until we burn.

Waves of bliss surround us as we lie on the shore.

Listening to the ocean as it still roars.

The Mountain and the Sea

(written January 2023)

Unsplash Image by Brent Ninaber

Born,

in the shadow of a mountain.

It has been an arduous climb.

Sunk,

to the bottom of the ocean many times.

Heartache and grief have taught me many lessons.

Now,

I am not afraid of heights or depths.

Let me swim in the sea, and let me climb the peaks.

I will prevail over every obstacle ahead of me,

no longer a prisoner of my past or a casualty of a war that did not belong to me.

Black Widow

(written March 2023)

Unsplash by Malcom Green

Beware
the black widow
seeking a gigolo.
To entrap is what she desires.
Once caught
her web, she will weave.
Until you cannot see.
Trapped
with no way back.
She releases her venom.
And, as you attenuate before death, the black widow anticipates another victim.

I can breathe

(written October 2022)

Photo by Italo Melo on Pexels.com

I rose at dawn and made my way down to the sea.

I thought if I immersed myself in the ocean, I might be free, relieved from the burden of your words and the wounds I still carry.

The saltwater made my wounds sting, but your words refused to drown, remaining attached to my skin.

I walked further into the water until the waves finally dragged me down.

I had no wish to be rescued, nor did I want to drown.

As I sank further, the echoes of your words began to fade as I silently prayed to be free.

I did not drown, and now I am no longer suffocated by your words.

I can breathe.
