Your Branches

(written May 2023)

Like a tree
you remain rooted
in my mind.
Memories
like branches intertwine
my daily life.
Thoughts of long ago
when you were almost mine.
With every passing year,
the tree becomes more bare.
As the leaves blow off
in the wind with
the words I write.
I search the sky,
hoping to find a ray
of light and by night
I wish upon stars.
But I see no spark.
Nothing to indicate
you think of me too.
And so my garden
of hope is without flowers.
Devoid of colour or
sweet perfume.
Your branches, however,
I cannot
remove.

  1. You have captured the experience of memories wonderfully! My favorite lines were those final few
    “Your branches, however,
    I cannot
    remove.”

It’s something I have pondered often – if I could remove certain memories would I/should I?
