Casualties

We are all casualties of someone else’s war.
What we despise in another may also be present in ourselves.
We do our best to quell the demons somebody else left in their wake by addicting ourselves to anything we can.
We grip so tightly,
hoping to avoid the abyss.
Or the chaos of our minds.
Sadly, we cannot go through life without pain.
And dirt is what we carry
as we escape from the battle.
What you choose to do with it after that is entirely up to you.
But never aim your weapon at someone who comes to you in unarmed truth.
